Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a permanent anchor for an artificial tooth.  Dental implants are used to permanently replace a single missing tooth, a bridge, a partial denture or a full denture.  A replacement tooth supported by a dental implant looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.  Dental implants can also be used to help secure a removable bridge or plate in place so that adhesives are not necessary.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Anyone missing a tooth or teeth who is in reasonably good health.

Is Age a Factor?

Implants cannot be placed until the skeleton has reached 80% of its growth.  Generally girls younger than 16 and boys younger than 18 are not candidates.  There is no upper age limit.

How Long do Implants Last?

Dental implants are considered permanent.   Good home care is a necessity. Any disease that can affect the teeth can also affect an implant.

Can an implant be put in at the same time a tooth is extracted?

In many cases yes.  As long there is no infection present and the bone is healthy.

Can implants be used to replace more than one tooth?

Implants can be used to replace anything from a single tooth to a full denture.
